Women’s Basketball Transfer News, May 2022


Virginia Tech officially announces the addition of Maryland transfer Ashley Owusu (6-0 JR point guard, Woodbridge, VA).

Head Coach Kenny Brooks announced the signing of 6-foot-0 guard Ashley Owusu Wednesday afternoon. Owusu starred at Maryland for the last three seasons where she was a 1,000-pooint scorer, two-time AP All-American, and was honored as the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award winner in 2021.

“I am thrilled to add Ashley to our already talented and experienced squad,” Coach Brooks said of Owusu. “Ashley’s experience and abilities will tie directly to the philosophies we desire. Her versatility will give us the ability to play multiple people in multiple positions. She adds an element that we haven’t had here before. Her desire to win and willingness to do what’s best for the team will elevate our program.”

This past season, Owusu averaged 14.3 points per game, 3.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting 42% from the field. She scored in double figures in 20 of 27 games played and registered eight 20-point games, scoring a season-high 30 points vs. Stanford in November. 

In 2022, Owusu was named to the Big Ten’s Second Team.

San Diego State officially announces the addition of Utah State transfer Adryana Quezada (5-10 JR wing, Frisco, TX).

Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson has announced the signing of Adryana Quezada, a transfer from Utah State.

Adryana Quezada (Eh-dree-on-uh KAY-zah-duh) is a 5’10” guard/forward who has averaged 14.5 points and 7.4 rebounds across 57 collegiate games. Last year at Utah State she was an All-Mountain West honorable selection after averaging 15.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.

“We have seen firsthand the difference Adryana can have on a game,” Terry-Hutson said. “She is extremely hard-working and has consistently improved throughout her successful college career. She is a terrific rebounder, especially for her size, and will bring us versatility with her ability to play multiple positions. We also love the competitive toughness and team-first mentality she has.”

“I’m very excited to come to SDSU,” Quezada explained. “On my visit, I got to see the culture and team they are building here, and I want to be a part of it.”

Quezada shot 53.6 percent from the field last year, which was third in the Mountain West. She was also fifth in the conference in scoring (15.2 ppg) and sixth in rebounding (7.9 rpg). She found her groove toward the end of the season when she averaged 20.4 points per game over her final 14 contests.

Saint Mary’s announces the addition of Lehigh grad transfer Clair Steele (5-5 SR point guard, Orinda, CA), the Patriot League leader in assists in both 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Saint Mary’s Women’s Basketball has added grad student transfer, and Orinda, Calif. native, Clair Steele for the 2022-23 season.

Steele is transferring from Lehigh University where she amassed 269 assists over her four-year career in exactly 100 games played with 38 starts. In her senior season alone, she racked up 131 assists to just 33 turnovers to lead the Patriot league in assist-to-turnover ratio.

The true point guard led the Patriot league in assists per game in her junior and senior seasons with 4.4 apg as a junior and 5.5 apg as a senior for the top scoring team in the league last season. She led the team as a junior in steals per game (1.5) and averaged a team-high 31.4 minutes per contest.

Maryland announces the addition of Towson transfer Allie Kubek (6-2 SO forward, Elkton, MD). During 2021-22, she averaged 14.6 PPG and 6.2 RPG, earning third-team All-CAA honors.

Maryland women’s basketball head coach Brenda Frese officially welcomed transfer Allie Kubek (KOO-beck) to the program Tuesday.

Kubek, a 6-2 forward from Elkton, Md, was at Towson for her first two seasons. She averaged 14.6 points and 6.2 rebounds this past season as she helped the Tigers to a 24-8 record. She earned All-CAA honors this year and was named to the All-CAA Rookie Team last season. 

Frese on Kubek: “We’re thrilled to add Allie to our program. She and her family are Maryland people and it’s been a pleasure getting to know them. Allie is a dynamic front court player who can score in different ways. She’ll be able to help us stretch the defense and space the floor. She can get her own shot and she’s shown she can really be a factor rebounding the ball. Allie addresses a lot of needs for us. She’s already had a strong start to her college career and we want to help her keep it going. I think her teammates and our fans are going to enjoy her.”

Kubek on Maryland: “I chose Maryland because I wanted to spend the next three years playing the sport I love for Coach Frese and her staff at Maryland’s flagship university! The team made me feel super comfortable. It felt like family right away.”
