Lanae Riley continues to develop skills as Hoban preps for Division I state tournament (Akron Beacon Journal, 3/10/2021)
Riley averages about 22 points, nine rebounds, two steals and one assist per game this season.
Riley led Hoban past Canton McKinley and GlenOak in Division I regional tournament games at Medina. She scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 63-56 win over McKinley in a regional semifinal on Tuesday, scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Hoban to a 59-46 win over GlenOak in a regional final on Friday.
“We definitely need to have her have another great performance, statistically,” Davis said of Riley. “I think she brings leadership to the team. She is the only person on our 15-player roster that has been to a state tournament before. She did that as a freshman when she was at St. Vincent-St. Mary. We are going to need to follow her calm leadership and approach to the game.
“In terms of what I have seen from her recently, statistically, she did not have a very good game against [North Canton] Hoover in our district final, but other girls were able to step up and play well.
“In the regional, I saw a lot of growth on the offensive end from Lanae against McKinley and GlenOak. Not only around the basket, but she showed a lot of other versatility as far as dribbling the ball, pulling up and shooting a jumper. Her mid-range game was very effective versus another true post player, and that definitely gave her an advantage.”
