Reagan duo of Christeen Iwuala and Samantha Wagner stands tall (San Antonio Express-News, 11/1/2020)

Wagner is an intimidating presence with her height on the perimeter. Wagner can play the point or off-guard. She can shoot over smaller players, and drive to the bucket against bigger players….

Iwuala and Wagner have taken ownership of the team from a leadership standpoint. That wasn’t always the case, especially last season when Wagner arrived as a ballyhooed freshman who immediately took a prominent role on the team. Iwuala was voted a team captain and needed time to feel comfortable with duties that responsibility entailed.

“I think we both had a struggled with being younger, and me being a starter and doing a lot on the team and her being younger and being a captain,” said Wagner, who committed to Baylor in eighth grade. “We definitely had people say, ‘Hold on. Why is a freshman and sophomore doing a lot for this team?’ It was an adjustment at first. Once I proved I deserved to be on the team from a basketball standpoint, and she deserved to be a captain, they rallied behind us very well.”

They certainly earned their spots. Wagner was selected as the Express-News Newcomer of the Year after averaging 15.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 5.0 blocks. Iwuala was an Express-News Super Team selection with 14.4 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. Both earned all-state honors.
