Meet the 2018-19 ALL-USA Central Indiana girls basketball Super Team (Indianapolis Star, 3/4/2019)
The sophomore averaged 14.1 points for the Wildcats, who made the program’s first state finals appearance. She shot 44 percent from the floor and 39 percent from behind the arc. She came up especially big in the state tournament, averaging 13.5 points and leading the team in scoring in the regional championship, semistate and state final games.
Evaluation
The formidable combination of size, athleticism, and skill is coveted at the next level at the point guard position, and Jayla Smith has it. Jayla was able to get anywhere she wanted on the floor off the dribble and was a nightmare, especially for smaller guards. She made multiple triples off the dribble and off the catch. A few of the triples were from well beyond the arc. And believe me, Smith can heat up quickly. She has great speed and length, which serves her well on both ends of the court. And her leaping ability, especially on the second jump, was eye-popping.
