Women’s Basketball Transfer News, October 2020


Pitt announces that Jayla Everett (5-10 JR point guard, St. Louis, MO) has received an immediate-eligibility waiver, following her transfer from New Mexico.

The University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball team announced Thursday, Oct. 15, that junior guard Jayla Everett received a waiver from the NCAA and is immediately eligible for the 2020-21 campaign. Everett has two years of eligibility remaining after playing her first two seasons at New Mexico.

“I am thrilled that the NCAA has granted Jayla’s waiver to play for us immediately this season,” said third-year head coach Lance White. “Her experience and playmaking abilities will really help us. She is an explosive player on both ends of the court who loves to compete and I can’t wait to see her immediate impact on our team.”

The explosive guard from St. Louis, MO started her collegiate career at New Mexico and started 48 of her 50 career games for the Lobos before transferring to Pitt in April.

Kentucky announces that Olivia Owens (6-4 RS SO center, Ballston Spa, NY) has been granted an immediate-eligibility waiver from the NCAA, following her transfer from Maryland.

The NCAA has granted immediate eligibility to University of Kentucky center Olivia Owens, making her eligible to compete for the Wildcats in the 2020-21 season, it was announced Thursday.

Owens, who was a five-star prospect and one of the best centers in the nation coming out of high school in 2018, joined the Kentucky program in June after transferring from Maryland.

“Olivia is a phenomenal person and outstanding basketball player. We are so happy for her that she will be able to compete this year with her teammates,” said UK head coach Matthew Mitchell. “She has worked hard since arriving on campus to be able to play this season and I know her teammates and all of us are overjoyed for her that she will get that opportunity.”

“I am so excited for the next chapter and looking forward to playing with my teammates this season,” Owens said. “Let’s go BBN!”

Michigan State is awaiting word on a transfer waiver request for Janai Crooms, formerly at Ohio State. Their other two non-grad transfers, Alisia Smith and Jayla James, are sitting out the season.

Merchant said Michigan State is applying for a waiver from the NCAA in hopes of gaining immediate eligibility for junior Janai Crooms, a transfer from Ohio State.

“We’re hopeful that maybe we will see her this year,” Merchant said. “Step one has been completed and we’ve got a thumbs up on that. We’re hopeful that maybe we will have an opportunity to see her in a uniform at some point here, and sooner rather than later.”

Crooms is one of four transfers, joining graduate transfer Lauren Rewers from Hawaii, as well as junior forward Alisia Smith and sophomore forward Jayla James, both transfers from Penn State who will sit out this season.
