Women’s Basketball Transfer News, July 2020

Former Kentucky player Deasia Merrill (6-1 FR forward, Villa Rica, GA) is returning to her home state, transferring to Georgia State (Sun Belt).

Deasia Merrill is joining the Georgia State women’s basketball program after one year at Kentucky, the Villa Rica, Ga., native announced this week.

Merrill missed her freshman year at Kentucky due to injury and will have to sit out the 2020-21 season due to NCAA transfer rules but will have four years of eligibility remaining.

“We are excited to bring another Georgia native back home,” head coach Gene Hill said. “Deasia was a player I recruited while I was at N.C. State and I feel that she is a perfect fit four our 4-out offense.”

Hill has now brought in four Georgia natives from Power-5 programs in just two years.

Western Michigan grad transfer Jordan Walker (5-8 RS SO guard, Muskegon, MI) has a number of offers, including Baylor, Clemson, Pitt, Tennessee, and Texas Tech.

With two seasons of eligibility remaining, Walker has decided to leave WMU and enter the transfer portal. Her list of suitors is strong, too: Among her offers are those from Power Five schools such as Baylor, Clemson, Pitt, Tennessee and Texas Tech.

As a graduate transfer, Walker will be eligible immediately. She’s in the process of making her decision.

“It’s kind of up in the air. I’ve been doing a lot of praying and trying to find in my heart where I should be for this next chapter,” Walker said. “I’m excited, but I’m kind of sad (leaving relationships at WMU behind).”

Former UTEP player Jordan Jenkins (5-5 JR point guard, Tennessee Colony, TX) has transferred to Texas Women’s University (D-II), with two years of eligibility after sitting out the 2019-20 season.

“I am thrilled to add Jordan to our team,” said Jillson. “Jordan is a fierce competitor, who will make everyone around her better.  She is difficult to contain and a dynamic player who can get to the rim and score from the perimeter.  Her vision, ability to push in transition, and her knowledge and feel for the game is evident when you see her play.  She will be an exciting player for our Pioneer fans to watch for the next 2 seasons.”

Jenkins was part of the UTEP basketball program for the past three seasons, sitting out the 2019-20 season as a redshirt while recovering from an injury. In her two seasons of competition, Jenkins saw action in 47 games, drawing the start in 22, averaging 2.4 points, 1.8 assists, and 1.4 rebounds per contest. Jenkins hit a career-high with 11 points while dishing out six assists in the 2018-19 season opener against Alcorn State, starting a season in which she led the Miners in assists per game (2.4) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6).
