Grad transfer guard Andra Espinoza-Hunter— former Mississippi State and UConn player—has been granted midyear eligibility at Seton Hall, rather than for fall 2021, and will have eligibility for the 2021-22 season as well.

Seton Hall women’s basketball head coach Anthony Bozzella announced today that graduate transfer Andra Espinoza-Hunter (Ossining, N.Y.) has been granted a legislative relief waiver, and instead of becoming eligible next fall, is now able to suit up for the Pirates for this spring semester.

Espinoza-Hunter will still have the 2021-22 season of eligibility remaining as well.

“I just can’t thank our compliance officers enough,” Bozzella said.  “Will Aloia and Tatum Colitz are two of the very best in the business, and I know they’ve worked tirelessly to get this waiver approved by the NCAA.  Will and Tatum are a huge part of any success we enjoy moving forward.”

A significant talent, Espinoza-Hunter will immediately provide much needed depth to the Pirates, who have been dealing with injuries since the start of the season, including two that are likely season-enders.

Valparaiso (MVC) announces the addition of Loyola Chicago transfer Maya Dunson (5-11 wing, Dayton, OH). She’ll be immediately eligible as a midyear enrollee, having graduated from Loyola this month (she was not on their 2020-21 roster).

Valpo women’s basketball head coach Mary Evans announced today that Maya Dunson has enrolled at Valparaiso University mid-year and has joined the women’s basketball program. Dunson, a 5-11 wing player, will be eligible to play immediately, beginning with Valpo’s MVC opener at Illinois State Jan. 1.

“I chose Valpo because I loved the overall atmosphere and nurturing environment that the coaches create,” Dunson said. “The coaching staff really cares for all of the players as people and really wants every single person on the team to succeed, both on and off the court. I also loved the coaching style and the program’s style of play — it seems that all of the players play free with tons of encouragement.”

Dunson comes to Valpo after playing one and a half seasons at Loyola. As a freshman in 2018-19, Dunson appeared in 26 games off the bench, averaging 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds in 13.5 minutes per game of action. She scored in double figures three times in the season’s final four games, including back-to-back 13-point efforts in the MVC Tournament. Last season, Dunson averaged 2.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 10 appearances, scoring six points apiece in wins over Chicago State and Bowling Green. . . .

A standout in the classroom, Dunson received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Loyola University Chicago in December 2020, studying on the pre-med track with a focus on oncology. She was a member of the Dean’s List throughout her time at Loyola and received the St. Peter Faber Scholar Award in 2019. She will pursue a master’s degree in public health through Valpo’s College of Nursing and Health Professions, with plans to eventually attend medical school to become an oncologist and cancer epidemiologist.
