Women’s Basketball Personnel News, August 14: Ohio State, Texas, Cal, St. Francis Brooklyn

Ohio State: “Update” on Patrick Klein

Through a Freedom of Information Act request, the Columbus Dispatch obtained the annual personnel performance reviews for departed Ohio State associate head coach Patrick Klein. No clues to his sudden resignation were found in the uniformly positive job evaluations. One paragraph, however, revealed that “Klein has failed to respond to an offer to continue to participate in the investigation” that the university is conducting into possible NCAA or university policy violations he may be associated with.

In a letter addressed to Klein on Aug. 7, Ohio State associate athletic director for human resources Krissy Mullins noted that the university has an obligation to complete its investigation into potential violations of both NCAA and university policy and that Klein has failed to respond to an offer to continue to participate in the investigation.

Texas: Lashann Higgs Eligible in 2019-20

The Big 12 approved a waiver enabling Lashann Higgs to return for a fifth year at Texas. She had suffered a season-ending injury during the fourth game of the 2018-19 season. Over the course of her college career, she has averaged 9.5 PPG. Higgs started all 35 games in 2017-18, averaging 12.8 PPG and 2.7 APG.

Texas guard Lashann Higgs will be eligible to compete for the Longhorns in the 2019-20 season. The Big 12 Conference has officially approved a hardship waiver for Higgs, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee in Texas’ November 23, 2018 game vs. Quinnipiac.

Higgs, a senior who has played in 107 career games for the Longhorns and has scored 1,019 career points, saw action in only four games in 2018-19 before suffering a season-ending injury.

Cal: Charmin Smith’s Contract Details

Another FOIA request, this one from the Golden Bear Report, reveals the details of the contract signed by new Cal head coach Charmin Smith. She has a five-year deal, through the 2023-24 season. Through a combination of base salary and “talent fee,” Smith’s annual compensation will total $480,400. The report also includes a rundown of the contract’s bonuses and buyout scenarios.

Like other Cal head coaches, Smith is paid a base salary and a talent fee. The talent fee is for speaking at booster functions, radio shows, TV appearances, and essentially all the things that modern coaches do.

Smith’s base salary is constant at $275,000 a year. Her talent fee is $205,400 a year. Combining those two, Smith’s salary is $480,400 a year with those two added together.

St. Francis Brooklyn: New Associate Head Coach

Jennifer Leedham has joined Linda Cimino‘s staff at St. Francis Brooklyn as associate head coach. Leedham was an assistant coach at Wagner the last three seasons.

St. Francis College Brooklyn women’s basketball head coach Linda Cimino announced today the hiring of Jennifer Leedham as the Terriers new associate head coach. Leedham comes to Brooklyn Heights after serving as a women’s basketball assistant coach at fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) member Wagner for the past three seasons.

“This is a significant hire for us as it was important that we filled this position with someone who can attract high-quality student-athletes to Brooklyn Heights. Jen is a proven recruiter with a large international network, who will take our recruiting efforts to the next level. As a former head coach, she has a great understanding of the game and is one of the most loyal and passionate people I know.
