Women’s Basketball Personnel News, 2019–20 Season

Michigan State

Redshirt junior forward Mardrekia Cook is out for the season with an Achilles tear. She’s the third Spartan to have suffered a season-ending injury, and sophomore Tory Ozment suffered a concussion in the team’s latest game.

Nia Hollie is the only other senior veteran that has consistently been on the court as the Spartans have had to rely on youth with preseason All-Big Ten guard and senior Shay Colley, senior Victoria Gaines out for the season.

And Mardrekia Cook, who has been in and out of the lineup this season, joined that duo in being sidelined for the season this week with an Achilles tear.

The injury list grew again Thursday when sophomore Tory Ozment suffered a concussion while taking a charge in the second half.

Michigan

Senior guard Akienreh Johnson may return for the 2020-21 season. The team applied for a waiver that would allow her return based on the multiple injuries that have kept her off the floor for extended periods during her collegiate career.

There is a chance Johnson could share this message with another freshman class at Michigan. The team applied in November to the NCAA for a waiver, allowing for a fifth year of eligibility because of lost time to those injuries. If that does not come through, Akienreh has other options to work toward her career in social work or law enforcement or even play pro ball internationally.

“Just have the option of being a senior and not having to go directly into the real world yet is very kind of … calms you down a little bit, but it is very difficult to go through the entire year being a senior but you don’t really know if you’re last year senior or have another year,” Johnson said.

Barnes Arico says she believes that fifth year of eligibility for Johnson will happen, which means more time for the duo to spend together.

Northwestern State

Head coach Jordan Dupuy has resigned, and associate head coach Aaron A. Swinson was named interim head coach.

Northwestern State head women’s basketball coach Jordan Dupuy has submitted his resignation and will be placed on leave for the remainder of his contract, which expires on April 30.

A mutual decision was reached between Dupuy and the NSU administration to move in another direction that would be in the best interest of the program.

The announcement comes one day after the Lady Demons’ 72-56 loss to Southeastern Louisiana at Prather Coliseum. That defeat dropped Northwestern State to 5-13 overall and 2-7 in Southland Conference play.

Dupuy was in his fourth season as the Lady Demons head coach, compiling a 36-60 overall record.

Associate head coach Aaron A. Swinson will serve as the team’s interim head coach and will hold that role through the remainder of the 2019-20 season. Northwestern State returns to action Wednesday, hosting New Orleans at 6:30 p.m. in Prather Coliseum.

The university will have no further comment regarding this development.

Michigan

Senior forward Kayla Robbins announced on Twitter that she suffered a torn ACL in the Wolverine’s most recent game. She will miss the rest of the 2019-20 season. She had ranked as the team’s second-leading scorer (11.6 PPG).

Bucknell

Sophomore starting point guard Marly Walls (7.1 PPG, 3.1 APG) is out for the season with a torn ACL and MCL.

Bucknell had another question arise after last week’s win over Holy Cross. Starting point guard Marly Walls scored a career-high 13 points, but then suffered a serious knee injury. She tore her ACL and MCL, and will be out for the season.

“We can’t make up for Marly, but I think we can hang in there and continue to compete,” Woodruff said. “We would rather have her, that’s for sure.”
