Ruby Whitehorn thrives in expanded role with top-ranked Detroit Edison girls basketball (MLive, 2/22/2021)

“Ruby is a dynamic player,” Hagemann said after the win against Marian. “She can do whatever I need. If we need rebounds, she’s got it. If we need her to be a guard, she’s got it. If we need her to be a shooter, she’s got it. I feel like Ruby is a really good all-around player that we need height wise, talent wise and everything.”

Entering high school at 5-9, Whitehorn’s growth “almost 6-1” in height has also complimented her growth on the floor.

“Even before I was six feet, I always thought I was tall,” Whitehorn said. “I’ve always played like I was tall. I love to rebound, so being a little bit taller just made it a lot easier.”

More than just showing off her talents, Whitehorn is also focused on being a leader for a very young Edison roster. Knowing what it was like to be tested by Miss Basketball winners in practice since her freshman year, Hagemann is hoping to mold the young roster the way she was.

“I think that my role on the team as a leader is just to get us going, to set an example and step up,” Whitehorn said. “As a freshman, I was very nervous playing with people who are better than me. For my freshman, I just try to push them to the limits. I try and play against them and give them extra reps and hope they do their best.”
