Coaching News: Spring/Summer 2019


Amber Moore has been named an assistant coach at Houston Baptist, after a two-year stint as an assistant at Saint Leo University in Tampa, Florida. Originally from Detroit, Moore played basketball at Illinois.

Amber Moore has been hired as assistant women’s basketball coach at HBU, head coach Donna Finnie announced on Friday.

“I am very excited to add Amber Moore to our staff,” said Finnie. “Amber is humble and genuine and I was so impressed with her during the interview process in how mature she was and with her ability to connect with people. She has a lot of experience for a young coach and recruiting connections across the country which will help us in our search to find the best fit for our program. Amber is going to be working with our guards and I know they are going to enjoy being challenged by her. We are excited to welcome Amber to HBU and look forward to getting her on the road searching for future Huskies very soon.”

Joe Silvestri has been hired as an assistant coach at North Florida, having previously served on the FIU and UCF staffs.

“I’m really excited that Joe has decided to join us here,” said Gibbs. “He has great knowledge of the game, recruiting contacts across the country and most important he is an unbelievable person. His energy and passion is contagious, and will be a tremendous impact on the continued growth of this program.”

Silvestri joins the Ospreys as an assistant coach after a three-year stint with FIU women’s basketball. Prior to working with the Panthers, he was at UCF, where he ascended to an assistant coach after serving as director of program development.

Shannon Schweyen has signed a contact to continue as Montana head coach in the 2019-20 season.

University of Montana women’s basketball coach Shannon Schweyen confirmed Thursday she has signed a contract to coach the Lady Griz in the 2019-20 season.

Nikki West, former associate head coach at North Carolina State, has been named an assistant coach at Charlotte.

Charlotte head women’s basketball coach Cara Consuegra has announced the hiring of former NC State Associate Head Coach Nikki West to her staff as an assistant coach. West, who was with the Wolfpack for five years, has also worked at UT Chattanooga and USC Upstate and has been a part of eight NCAA Tournament teams.

“We are thrilled that Nikki is joining our Niner family,” Consuegra said. “Nikki is a star in our profession and has been a winner in every place she has been. Her reputation as a recruiter and developer of post players is top notch but most importantly, Nikki is a developer of young women. She will join us in our mission to build young ladies through our core values of H.E.A.R.T. We look forward to the great impact her wisdom, leadership and character will have on our program and the Charlotte 49ers community.”

Miami (FL) head coach Katie Meier has received a contract extension through the 2024-25 season, although the new deal adds just one year onto her contract and comes two years after her last extension.

The new deal, which will keep Meier in Coral Gables through the 2024-25 season, comes just two years after the coach’s contract was also extended after the 2017 season. Since, the Hurricanes have continued to be one of the more consistent teams in the ultra-competitive ACC, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in both 2018 and 2019.

Alexis Lawrence joins the Northern Illinois coaching staff as an assistant coach. She spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Columbia College, an NAIA schools in Columbia, Missouri.

Northern Illinois University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Lisa Carlsen announced the addition of Alexis Lawrence to her coaching staff as an assistant coach on Thursday.

“I’m thrilled to work for Coach Carlsen and be a part of the Huskie family,” Lawrence said. “I have so much respect for her and what she brings to women’s basketball. I’m looking forward to growing within the NIU athletic and university community and am excited to work with such an amazing group of student-athletes. I thank God for presenting me with this opportunity. I am truly grateful and humbled.”

Lawrence comes to DeKalb after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. The Cougars compiled a 57-11 record in her two years on the bench, going 44-4 in American Midwest Conference play. This past season, Lawrence was named the 2019 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year after leading Columbia to a 29-5 record and the program’s first #1 ranking.

The Arizona Board of Regents has approved a 70 percent raise for head coach Adia Barnes, to $400,000 per year.

Barnes led the UA women’s basketball team to the WNIT championship in her third year last season while making $235,000, the lowest salary among Pac-12 head women’s basketball coaches. She will now earn $400,000 annually, plus retention bonuses of an extra $25,000 each year starting in 2020-21, bringing her to $500,000 in salary and retention bonuses for the final year of her contract in 2023-24.
