Shallowater’s Brattain named LSV Preseason Player of the Year (Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, 10/31/2020)

Brattain averaged 17.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and was named the Caprock Classic MVP as well as the District 2-3A co-Offensive Player of the Year en route to helping the Fillies advance to the state’s biggest stage.

She also devoted her fall to getting ready for basketball instead of playing volleyball due to the rigorous time commitment of both sports. Because of the current COVID-19 pandemic, however, that wasn’t always easy.

Gym time was limited, so Brattain relied on what she was able to do during the summer with her AAU team.

“I’m not a quiet person if you know me, so it really wasn’t hard for me to step up because I knew they needed someone to step up for them,” said Brattain, who was also named the District 2-3A co-Offensive Player of the Year. “I really just had to ignore the fact that we’re all different ages. No matter if I’m the youngest on the team, we all saw each other as one. We just had to balance it out and listen to one another, and I thought that really grew throughout the year.”

Being a leader was more than just telling her teammates what to do, however, as she learned different personalities required different tactics. Brattain developed into a better communicator, which created stronger bonds on the court and friendships off the hardwood.

“I learned that if I said something to the group, not everybody would take it personally because we’re all different. So I knew if I wanted to get something across, it would be one-on-one,” Brattain said. “At the beginning of the year, it was like I trust you, but not as much to where I was going to have one-on-one talks with you. So, throughout the year, it really grew in that relationship. By now, I feel like I can go and talk to any one of them right now if I wanted to.”
